Step into the enchanting world of Engawa Cafe (Showa no Ie), a charming establishment nestled in the heart of Adachi City, Tokyo. This delightful cafe is an exceptional blend of nostalgia and warm hospitality, set in a beautifully preserved Showa period building that whispers tales of the past while offering a serene escape from the bustling city life.

The moment you enter, you're greeted by a cozy, inviting atmosphere that feels like a step back in time. The interior, adorned with vintage decor, evokes a sense of tranquility, making it the perfect spot to unwind—be it alone or with friends. The garden view is simply stunning, offering a colorful palette of seasonal blooms that add to the cafe's charm.

Engawa Cafe presents a carefully curated menu that promises a delightful experience for coffee and dessert lovers. The coffee, skillfully brewed from high-quality beans, has garnered praise for its robust flavor, though the palate may find some of the American brews a tad bitter—certainly a matter of personal taste! For those with a sweet tooth, don't miss their seasonal desserts, particularly the apple pie, as highlighted in customer reviews. The tarts enchant with delightful flavors, although some patrons, like Kseniia Malysheva, have suggested balancing the cheesecake layer with a slightly thinner crust for an even more enjoyable bite.

Customer experiences at Engawa Cafe often echo the same sentiment: it’s a hidden gem worthy of discovery. One patron, E, expressed how the cafe serves as a calming retreat where each visit feels rejuvenating. The changing seasonal desserts mean there's always something new to look forward to, while the friendly customer service ensures that every guest feels welcomed.

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful spot to sip a perfectly brewed coffee, savor flavorsome treats, or simply enjoy a moment of tranquility in a lush garden, Engawa Cafe is a must-visit. As Ali Low aptly noted, it offers a stunning setting to relish your coffee and cake, making every visit a treat for the senses.

With its unique blend of historical ambiance and culinary delights, this cafe radiates warmth and charm. Just be mindful of their limited opening days—only four days a week, excluding weekends—so plan your visit accordingly to ensure you can experience this delightful oasis.

The American coffee was bitter but thats just my baby tastes. The apple pie was real nice as well. The atmosphere was very Showa-esque and cozy.

Very beautiful and atmospheric cafe with a confusing schedule as they work only 4 days a week and none of those 4 days are weekends The house and the garden are amazing. Coffee is nicely brewed, good beans. Tarts are also tasty, put I’ definitely recommend to make a cheesecake layer thicker or the cookie crust thinner as the texture is a bit unbalanced now. This cafe is definitely worth a visit. I mean, the vibe!

This café is definitely one of the best places in Tokyo, a hidden gem that transports you back in time as soon as you step inside. The desserts change according to the season but the coffee is always delicious. The garden and the house are just so calming and delightful and it creates such a beautiful space to spend time with friends or just by yourself. The customer service is lovely and kind too, which is why I can’t recommend this place enough. I love love love everything about this place. Coronavirus measures are properly enforced - Tables are very spaced away from each other, there is plenty of alcohol spray and everyone must wear a mask to enter.

Damn near cried, this was so good. The peach tart was an absolute gift from the gods—perfect butter crust, fluffy and not to sweet tart filling, topped with fresh and succulent peach slices. Complete chef's kiss. The garden in the back is heaven on Earth—I could literally stare out at it all day. Ah, but the review wouldn't be complete without mention of the people who work there! My server is probably the sweetest human being I've ever met. Didn't speak much English, but man was she so damn nice and accommodating to my broken Japanese! I felt so welcome and appreciated as a guest—she went up and beyond the call of duty as a service person to make me feel at home and at ease. Will definitely be coming back every time I'm in Tokyo!
